Things To Do In Southern California
Planning the family trip to Southern California used to entail attractions like Disneyland, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and Universal Studios, but today a newer destination landmark has rose to the top of the ranks in family fun. Legoland California located in Carlsbad, about 40 minutes north of San Diego is our enjoyment for the entire family. Now keep in mind that Legoland does not offer a lot in thrill rides and for people ages 12-65 years old Legoland is probably not going to fulfill your theme park needs, but for families with young kids it is a wonder land. Below is a good trip planning guide for when you venture off to take the family to Legoland! If you are making this trip in the summer bring the swim suits cause Legoland also has a Water Park with fun slides and pools for the entire family to experience.
Where To Stay:
Legoland beyond the theme park also it has its own resort and hotel where you can literally stay at Legoland. The themed hotel rooms will wow the kiddos and keep them excited. It truly does embrace the Legoland themes and characters which is a lot of fun especially for someone like me with two girls ages 9 and 7. The resort around holidays or major summer time vacations will be crowded so book well in advance. Staying at the resort allows you easy access to the theme park and you can even get good deals and discounts to the theme park when you stay at the hotel. Benefits Members with Visit Southern California can get discounted Legoland tickets when you sign up today.
The standard hotel fare is also located just beyond the Legoland Resort, and the area of Carlsbad is gorgeous, with long stretches on PCH of beautiful beaches and the Pacific Ocean.
We highly recommend the Grand Pacific Palisades as an ideal choice to stay for your trip to Legoland. As their website states - Located on 12 lushly landscaped acres along a ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Carlsbad Flower Fields, this world-class Carlsbad resort delivers magnificent views. Enjoy unmatched convenience to LEGOLAND® California Resort, the LEGOLAND® Water Park and the SEA LIFE™ Aquarium, all just steps from the resort through the pedestrian entrance.
Corporate and business travelers are invited to take advantage of our flexible event venues, terrific catering and full-service business center. Our space accommodates 10,000 square feet of event space including versatile conference rooms, an elegant ballroom and several outdoor venues.
Come see why our Carlsbad resort is the perfect choice for family vacations, romantic getaways, wedding celebrations, and corporate conferences. With airy guest Carlsbad rooms and suites, decked out in a cool California décor and fabulous amenities, Grand Pacific Palisades is one of the best Carlsbad resort and hotels near the beach. - Their line is “Where Luxury Living Meets Seaside Tranquility”. And this line holds true.
Their hotel rooms are spacious and their condos can hold the entire family comfortably. The views from this hotel are pretty spectacular and it offers some good dining options including a Karl Strauss Brewery and Restaurant which has the ideal beer selection.
The resort also offers some great Golf Packages and Spa treatments. Even though they are not located on the property you can take the complimentary shuttle to each. It is a short distance and worth the time.
Where to Eat:
Now we already mentioned Karl Strauss located at the Grand Pacific Palisades and Legoland Resort has places to dine, however if you are staying in the North County San Diego for Legoland we highly suggest you make the quick 15 minute drive across the 78 freeway to San Marcos and eat at Phil’s BBQ.
Phil’s BBQ is a San Diego landmark restaurant chain that is growing and growing. They are annually the winners of multiple awards for Best BBQ in San Diego and feature locations in Point Loma, Santee, Rancho Bernardo and San Marcos. Phil’s BBQ is some of the best West Coast BBQ you will have. The restaurant appeal and character stem from their customer service. You are greeted right when you walk in the door, the service staff is always kind and happy to assist you. The walk up and order method to Phil’s is part of the charm. The restaurant serves you large portions of food with great tasting side dishes. And their beer list is extensive and ice cold. Their chilled beer handles are not only a sight to behold but the beer it pours is so cold and refreshing it will have you saying “ahhhhhh” after the first sip.
Keep in mind that Phil’s BBQ is a popular restaurant in San Diego so if you are coming for dinner you may see a bit of a wait to order your food, but it is well worth the wait.
Where to Play:
We have other articles on here about things to do in San Diego, so read those in order to get a good idea of what to check out, but if you are looking to explore the area outside of Legoland, you could check out the San Diego Wild Animal Park located in Escondido or if it is racing season check out the Del Mar Racetrack, however for something simple and fun go to the pristine beaches of Carlsbad.
See Carlsbad is really the only stretch of PCH where you don’t see overly crowded beaches or parking lots. The board walk just above the beach is lined with people running and doing activities. The beaches offer plenty of sand and the water is relatively warm (for the California Pacific Ocean) so taking a swim is an adventure. You can rent surfboards and pick a spot along with the beach. Carlsbad has mostly beach breaks so the landing is always pretty soft.
Rent bikes or roller blade down the coast and enjoy the amazing views. Legoland isa family treat, but the area of Carlsbad offers more in terms of relaxation and tranquility. Try to step outside the Legoland experience and enjoy North County San Diego. It that taste of what Southern California is all about, sand, surf and a laid back vibe. Enjoy!
