At a picturesque spot near the Pacific Coast Highway, begin an ascent that leads you through coastal sage scrub along California's arid southern coast.
Warm up right away thanks to the scenic trail's rewarding slope. Along the way, your guide identifies common plants like monkey flower, goldenrod, and sagebrush. Alternate between admiring these flourishing species and directing your gaze toward the ocean, where foamy waves crash against the cliffs in a thrilling aquatic display. On a clear day, make out Catalina Island through the mist.
Trek a total of 2 miles (3.2 km) during your invigorating outing. If you're lucky, identify native birds like the hearty cactus wren and the brilliant orange-throated whiptail before descending back down into Laguna Beach.
